The Wafa Gas & Oil Processing Plant, located in Libya, is a major energy hub that spans both desert and coastal facilities. This critical infrastructure is designed to handle the production of gas, oil, and LPG, with a capacity of 4.44 billion standard cubic meters (BSCM) of gas per year and 60,600 barrels of oil per day. The plant is a key part of Libya’s energy landscape, supporting both domestic energy needs and international exports.
The project includes the development of well sites, gas and oil processing units, and extensive storage and export facilities located both inland and at the coast. The desert facilities handle production, while the coastal facilities focus on liquid fractionation and export operations.
As a critical partner in the development of the Wafa Gas & Oil Processing Plant, Sofregaz provided engineering expertise and support across several key areas, including:
- Engineering and design of gas and LPG treatment units, ensuring optimal performance and compliance with international standards,
- Procurement assistance, ensuring the right equipment and materials were selected to meet the plant’s complex requirements,
- Support for commissioning activities, ensuring that the plant was brought online safely and efficiently, with all systems operating as intended.
The Wafa Gas & Oil Processing Plant is designed to handle substantial production volumes, processing 4.44 BSCM of gas per year and producing 60,600 barrels of oil daily, alongside 13,200 barrels of liquid propane and 7,700 barrels of liquid butane. These products are stabilized, fractionated, and prepared for export to both regional and international markets.
Desert and Coastal Facilities
The project spans both desert production facilities and coastal fractionation units. The desert section includes well sites, gathering systems, gas and oil trains, and utilities necessary for the smooth operation of the plant. The coastal section features liquid treatment and export infrastructure, including large-scale storage tanks and jetty facilities for exporting stabilized oil, propane, and butane.
Storage and Export Facilities
The plant includes substantial storage capacity, with buffer tanks for oil, propane, and butane at both the desert and coastal sites. The coastal export terminal features specialized jetty and ship loading facilities to support the efficient and secure export of oil and LPG products to global markets.
