Melilla Project

Sofregaz Leading LNG & Hydrogen Integration in Spain
- Project Name: Melilla Decarbonization Project
- Country: Spain
- Project Site Location: LNG Facility and Thermal Power Plant in Melilla
- Name of Client: ENEL ENDESA
- Project Type: FEED Design
- Completion Date: 2021
The Decarbonisation Melilla Project is a forward-thinking initiative aimed at reducing the CO2 footprint of the local thermal power plant in Melilla, Spain. This project is focused on integrating natural gas and hydrogen into the energy mix, offering a cleaner alternative to traditional fossil fuels. The key feature of the project is the development of a new LNG import terminal with a 5,000 m³ storage capacity, which will connect directly to the power plant via a dedicated pipeline. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to achieve decarbonization and support sustainable energy solutions in the region.
Sofregaz is leading the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) for this project, with a comprehensive scope of work that includes:
- Developing the FEED design for the LNG terminal and associated infrastructure,
- Conducting thorough safety reviews to ensure compliance with international standards,
- Providing detailed cost estimation for project execution,
- Coordinating the preparation of technical documents for the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) tender.
The project will introduce a 5,000 m³ LNG storage terminal, designed to receive and store liquefied natural gas before it is transported to the local power plant via a dedicated pipeline. This terminal will play a vital role in ensuring a steady supply of natural gas, reducing the plant’s reliance on more carbon-intensive fuels.
Integration of Hydrogen for Decarbonization
In addition to natural gas, the project will focus on integrating green hydrogen into the power generation process, marking an important step towards sustainable energy production. The inclusion of hydrogen as a cleaner energy source is aligned with Spain’s long-term goals to reduce carbon emissions and transition to renewable energy.
Safety and Efficiency
Sofregaz is leading the safety review process, ensuring that the entire project is designed to minimize environmental impact while adhering to the highest safety standards. This includes the development of safety systems and processes for both the LNG terminal and the pipeline infrastructure connecting it to the thermal power plant.
Preparation for EPC Tender As part of the FEED study, Sofregaz is responsible for preparing all the necessary technical documents for the EPC tender. This ensures that the project is ready to move into the construction phase with minimized risk and maximum efficiency.
