The GR5 Gas Pipeline is a vital energy infrastructure project in Algeria, designed to transport gas from 9 fields in the South West of Hassi R’Mel. Spanning 760 km, this 48-inch pipeline traverses challenging terrains, including the Grand Erg Occidental sand dunes and various desert regions. The project includes compression stations and tie-in injection points, ensuring efficient and secure gas transmission from the production fields to Algeria's national network.
This pipeline is critical for Algeria’s energy supply and serves as a major artery for transporting natural gas across the country. It also highlights the increasing demand for reliable infrastructure in Algeria’s energy sector.
Sofregaz has been entrusted with leading the conceptual design and FEED (Front-End Engineering Design) phases of the GR5 Gas Pipeline. Our contributions include:
- Route and Geotechnical Studies: Conducting detailed route surveys to navigate the complex desert terrain, including topographical studies and geotechnical risk assessments.
- Hydraulic Design: Developing an efficient hydraulic model for the pipeline system to ensure optimal gas flow across all sections of the route.
- Environmental and Risk Assessments: Performing Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) and HAZOP/HAZID risk reviews to minimize environmental disruption and ensure the highest safety standards.
- Comprehensive FEED: Providing detailed engineering design for the pipeline, compression stations, and injection points, ensuring the project is technically sound and ready for EPC execution.
The GR5 pipeline route crosses one of the most difficult terrains in the region, including vast sand dunes and desert plains, requiring advanced engineering and geotechnical solutions.
Compression Stations
The project includes the installation of intermediary and final compression stations, each equipped with advanced turbine technology to maintain gas pressure throughout the pipeline's length.
