GOCO2 Project

CO₂ Liquefaction, Storage and Export – Pre-FEED Study in France
- Project Name: GO CO2
- Country : France
- Project Site Location : Montoir-de-Bretagne LNG terminal
- Name of Client : ELENGY
- Project Type : Pre - FEED
- Completion Date : Ongoing
The GOCO₂ Project is a strategic initiative for CO₂ management, located at the Montoir-de-Bretagne LNG terminal in France. Its objective is to liquefy and export up to 2.3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of CO₂ collected from various emitters. The design accommodates a variable flowrate, ranging from 27 t/h to 324 t/h, and employs propane as the intermediate refrigerant. Cooling is achieved either via sea water or through synergy with the LNG terminal, depending on operational conditions.
This flexible, scalable solution integrates reception, treatment, liquefaction, storage, and export of CO₂. A new jetty structure is planned for loading LCO₂ carriers at either low or medium pressure.
Sofregaz is entrusted with delivering the full Pre-FEED scope of the project, in two main phases:
Phase 1 – Review of Conceptual Study
Sofregaz reviews existing conceptual documents to validate input data, assess technical assumptions, and establish a solid foundation for the Pre-FEED. Deliverables include:
- Project Execution Plan
- Quality Plan
- Document List
- Concept Review Report with screening of technical options
Phase 2 – Pre-FEED Engineering Development
Sofregaz provides a multidisciplinary engineering package, addressing all major components of the project:
- Project Management: Design basis, project schedule, risk analysis, contract strategy
- Process Design: Process schemes (PFDs, PIDs), heat & material balances, ESD and sparing philosophies
- Safety & Environmental: Safety concept, HAZID/HAZOP, QRA, EIA, escape routes
- Piping & Layout: Plot plans, 3D models, general arrangements
- Civil Works: Structural design criteria, geotechnical specs, building plans
- Marine Facilities: Jetty layout, navigation and mooring studies, marine survey specs
- Instrumentation & Control: System philosophies, control room design, telecom architecture
- Electrical: Power balance, SLDs, load list
- Mechanical: Equipment specs, vendor selection, bid evaluations
- Construction & Reliability: RAM study, constructability analysis
- Cost & Schedule Estimation: EPC schedule (Level 2) and Class 3 CAPEX estimate
Flexible CO₂ Liquefaction Capacity
The plant is designed for a capacity of 2.3 MTPA, with a wide operating range to accommodate multiple emitters. Liquefaction uses propane as a refrigerant, cooled either with sea water or through synergy with LNG terminal streams.
Synergies with LNG Infrastructure
To optimize energy use and reduce CAPEX, the design allows the use of cold energy from LNG regasification facilities when available. This hybrid approach enhances the project’s technical and economic feasibility.
Integrated Export Infrastructure
The project includes a dedicated LCO₂ jetty, supporting safe and efficient loading of carriers under low or medium pressure regimes.
Comprehensive Pre-FEED Scope
Sofregaz delivers a full-scope Pre-FEED covering technical, environmental, safety, and cost aspects, supporting ELENGY in future EPC and investment decisions.
