LNH3 Export Terminal

Green Ammonia Export Hub in South Chile
- Project Name : NH3 Export Terminal in Paposo
- Country : Chile
- Project Site Location : Paposo, Central Chile
- Name of Client : PRDW / Project Owner : AES Corporation
- Project Type : Conceptual Engineering for Permitting purpose
- Completion Date : 2024
Located in Bahía Posesión, South Chile, the LNH3 Export Terminal is a cutting-edge facility designed to export anhydrous ammonia produced from green hydrogen. The terminal is a crucial component in the global shift towards sustainable energy, supporting the transition to low-carbon fuel alternatives. The facility includes three 60,000-tonne storage tanks, a 19 km cryogenic pipeline, and advanced LNH3 loading infrastructure, capable of handling large volumes of ammonia for export to international markets.
The project is part of a larger initiative to leverage green hydrogen production in the region, capitalizing on Chile’s abundant renewable energy resources, particularly wind and solar power, to produce green ammonia – an essential element for carbon-free energy and clean industrial processes.
Sofregaz has been entrusted with key responsibilities in the development of this ambitious project, including:
- Conceptual design of the terminal and associated infrastructure, ensuring efficient and safe operations,
- Conducting safety studies to minimize risks associated with the handling and storage of liquid ammonia,
- Providing a comprehensive CAPEX estimation to support investment decisions and ensure the project’s financial feasibility.
The LNH3 Export Terminal is designed to store and export anhydrous ammonia, which is produced using green hydrogen. This hydrogen is derived from renewable energy sources, making the project a key player in the global transition to sustainable energy. By exporting green ammonia, the terminal supports the reduction of carbon emissions in industries such as fertilizer production and energy generation.
Cryogenic Pipeline and Storage
The facility includes a 19 km cryogenic pipeline designed to transport liquid ammonia from the production site to the terminal. Additionally, the project features three 60,000-tonne full containment storage tanks, equipped with advanced boil-off gas (BOG) management systems, ensuring the safe and efficient storage of ammonia.
Advanced Export Facilities
The terminal’s LNH3 loading facilities are equipped to handle large-scale exports, with specialized infrastructure for loading LNH3 carriers. These facilities ensure that ammonia is safely transferred to ships, ready for transport to international markets.
Sustainability and Safety
A core focus of the LNH3 Export Terminal is its commitment to sustainability and safety. Sofregaz is conducting extensive safety studies to ensure that the project meets all regulatory standards and operates with minimal environmental impact. Additionally, the project’s reliance on green hydrogen underscores its role in promoting clean energy solutions.
