Magallanes Green Ammonia Project

Sofregaz has been entrusted with leading the conceptual design and conducting the CAPEX study for this innovative project. Our scope of work includes:

• Selection of pipeline and storage tank technologies to ensure efficiency and safety in ammonia production and transportation,
• Safety engineering to mitigate risks associated with ammonia handling and storage,
• Preparation of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Chapter 1, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and sustainability goals.

The Magallanes Project is centered on the production of green ammonia, which is ammonia produced using green hydrogen derived from renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. This environmentally friendly process significantly reduces carbon emissions compared to traditional ammonia production methods, positioning this project as a leader in the green energy transition.

Extensive Infrastructure

The project includes the construction of a 19 km cryogenic pipeline to transport ammonia, along with three 60,000-tonne full containment storage tanks. These tanks are designed for the safe storage of liquid ammonia under cryogenic conditions, ensuring that the product is ready for export to global markets.

BOG Handling and Export Facilities

In addition to storage and transportation infrastructure, the project also includes boil-off gas (BOG) management systems, which capture and re-liquefy vaporized ammonia to minimize product losses and environmental impact. Sofregaz is also responsible for designing the export facilities, ensuring efficient and safe loading operations at the jetty.

Comprehensive CAPEX Study

As part of the conceptual design, Sofregaz is conducting a detailed CAPEX study to evaluate the costs associated with the development of the project’s infrastructure, including the pipeline, storage tanks, and BOG systems. This analysis will help guide investment decisions and ensure that the project remains financially viable while meeting sustainability targets.
