Callisto Project

CO2 Liquefaction Feasibility Study in France
- Project Name: Callisto
- Country : France
- Project Site Location : Cavaou & Tonkin LNG Terminal
- Name of Client : ELENGY
- Project Type : Feasibility
- Completion Date : 2024
As a leader in CO2 management solutions, Sofregaz has been entrusted with conducting the feasibility study for the Callisto Project. This includes a thorough analysis of both standalone and synergy-based liquefaction approaches, focusing on:
- Design and process simulations for the CO2 liquefaction plant,
- Cost estimation for capacities of 1.2 MTPA and 4.0 MTPA,
- Comprehensive safety assessments to ensure secure operations,
- Evaluating the feasibility of using existing LNG terminal facilities to streamline the project’s development.
The Callisto Project will collect CO2 from industrial sources and process it through a liquefaction system. The liquefied CO2 will then be transported via LCO2 carriers for permanent storage or other industrial uses. The liquefaction technology will be designed to handle varying scales, with capacities of 1.2 MTPA and 4.0 MTPA being assessed.
Synergies with Existing LNG Terminal
One of the innovative aspects of the Callisto Project is its potential to leverage existing LNG terminal infrastructure to support the CO2 liquefaction process. By utilizing the LNG regasification facilities, the project can achieve significant cost savings and reduce capital expenditure (CAPEX). Sofregaz is evaluating the technical and financial feasibility of this synergy to ensure the most efficient and sustainable approach.
Safety and Regulatory Compliance
Safety is a priority for the Callisto Project, and Sofregaz is conducting comprehensive safety assessments to ensure that the liquefaction plant and associated infrastructure meet international safety standards. This includes risk assessments, emergency planning, and compliance with environmental regulations.
